Joseph Weldon & Mary Elizabeth Green

Picture
Joseph Weldon was born between 1780-1790 in Washington or Columbia County in Georgia in the area around or above Augusta. His parents were John and Nancy Weldon. He had a brother, Thomas. At least two younger sisters, and probably some other brothers and sisters.

He moved with his parents to eastern Tennessee possibly in 1793. This area may have been known as North Carolina when they moved there---or they may have lived even farther over into North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Green in Knox County, Tennessee in about 1808. They moved to Kentucky soon after their marriage. They are not listed in the Henderson County, Kentucky census of 1810, but must have arrived there soon after that. They had 9 children, probably born in Kentucky---except possibly the first one, Nancy, who might have been born in Tennessee.

Elizabeth Green Weldon was born in Tennessee (or North Carolina) in about 1794. She died between 1829 and 1830 in Henderson County. He died only a few years later in about 1834. After their deaths all of their children moved to Bond County, Illinois where Elizabeth's relatives, the Green(e)s lived.

Joseph's son, Thomas Fielder Weldon, recorded in the 1880 census that his father was born in Georgia and his mother in Tennessee. Joseph is listed in both the 1820 and 1830 Henderson County, so he was living there during that time. Approximate time of his death from the stories of his descents and from E. E. Adams story of the Green family.

Joseph was living beside Nancy Weldon in the 1830 Henderson County census, and think this was his widowed mother. His name appears on some of John Weldon's papers which indicting that John was his father, In the census his other neighbor was Thomas Weldon who appears to be his brother. Possibly Thomas was the older since his children are older than Joseph children.

In a biography written about one of Thomas descendents, it states that Thomas was born in Virginia rather than Georgia as Joseph was. This is possible if he was brought as an infant to Georgia. In this same story it says that Thomas grew up in North Carolina before this area became Tennessee. The family was in Knox County, Tennessee in 1800.

In the 1820 census there were two young women, 16-26, living with the widow Nancy Weldon next door to Joseph. They would appear to be two of his younger sisters. There is also a sprinkling of Weldons of the proper age and family names in Kentucky and Tennessee who might have been brothers of Joseph. (There's a John Weldon in Greenup County, Kentucky and a Andrew Weldon in Garrard County, Kentucky listed in the 1820 census.)

Families were usually large in those days and there could have been some older sisters--even in Henderson County. But they are almost impossible to trace once they are married and have another name.

It's unfortunate that Joseph lived in an area of the country and in a time where the records have been destroyed. He even died before census reports contained much family information. Other than Mr. Adams' book the following census reports give the only records naming Joseph Weldon---except, of course, the little bills and papers that once belonged to John Weldon or his family.
